Coaching and Teaching Adults

By Alex Har of Media Consultancy Asia Pte Ltd

Lots of literature has been written about adult learning styles...and why adults learn differently from children.

There are many theories surround this, most of these depicts the adult as

1. Being more goal seeking
2. Being lead by his goals , he is more self directed
3. He is problem and solution oriented and is harsher judge on relevancy of learning content
4. Prefers practical solutions to theory and concepts
5. Have a whole life experience that filters and colours the information he receives.

In practical term all these theories and thoughts points to one main direction. Adults need given strong motivation to learn. They need to see learning and the learning process as contributing to some important need in his life, basic, social or aspirational.

What Motivates Adult Learners?

- The company, the boss or some external party important to his career and livelihood says, implicitly demands that he should attend a course or training.

- For networking reasons, to make or maintain social relationships with people in his affinity or industry

- To gain a masters or doctorate, or other qualifications for social reasons of prestige

- As a form of mental or physical stimulation, entertainment, relaxation

- As a pure love for a subject

Implications of Learning Motivations for Trainers and Coaches

It is important for trainers and coaches to understand the motivation of each specific trainee or coachee. Every individual is differently motivated and to a different degree.

In one to one coaching it is important for coaches to have an agreement with their coachees as to what these motivation are?

Coahee's motivations can change over time or often fluctuate randomly. Coaches have to be mindful or these and be able to detect these and adopt strategies to focus coachees on their obejctive and intentions.
